Sticky Forest tracks (Wanaka)

Tranced's picture

We are heading down to Wanaka next month for a wedding and thought we would take the bikes down.
Sticky Forest has been coming up in a few conversations, has anyone here ridden there.
Heading back via mid Canty etc with a stopover- any recommendations with good tracks nearby.

We are keen on riding the new track at Castle hill but there may still be a bit much snow there

Cheers

Wanaka Trails

Gribby was talking about them on our Wednesaday ride, so i will ask him this week a bit more about them. Hopefully he will register with the website and answer you himself!

Sticky Forest

I did some exploring down there in April - there are a bunch of trails snaking through a relatively small area w/o much signage, rhyme or reason (that I could tell, anyways). I spent about 2 hours trying different tracks but honestly wasn't overwhelmed with most of them.

The Hanmer Springs trails are better organised and signed while covering more ground, in my opinion. I can probably dig out my maps of Sticky Forest for you, if you're keen.

I think you can buy trail

I think you can buy trail maps down in Wanaka, not sure where yet. Was interested to hear about any favourite tracks there.

There are quite a few vids on Youtube that feature high bridges and seesaws but it sounds like most of that stuff was removed last year

Had a ride in Sticky Forest

Had a ride in Sticky Forest but was a bit disappointed, signage was missing or damaged in alot of places and the tracks did not always tie up with the maps.
Some tracks had names on the start which were not on the map and other tracks were built almost on top of each other.

We had a nice ride around the new track over from the Albert town campground which is an 11.5km circuit designed for the likes of 10 hr races etc. Was easy riding but had some real fun bits and a great view to boot over the Clutha River.

Hit Hanmer on the way home, Yankee Zephyr was fast and dry but the next morning was slippery due to rain and hail. They have put in a few new link tracks- one called Swoop line connects the top of Flax gully track to Majuba and also picks up C line coming down off conical hill.
